What is radiofrequency ablation (RFA)?
RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that treats selected benign thyroid nodules without removing the thyroid gland. Under continuous ultrasound guidance, a fine electrode delivers controlled heat inside the nodule, which then shrinks gradually over the following months while healthy thyroid tissue is preserved.
It is performed under local anaesthetic, with no surgical incision and no neck scar — so most patients recover quickly and return to normal activities sooner than after an operation.
RFA may suit
- Benign thyroid nodules
- Enlarging thyroid nodules
- Cosmetic neck swelling
- Pressure symptoms
- Selected recurrent thyroid nodules
- Some cystic thyroid nodules
Suitability is always confirmed on your ultrasound and biopsy at your review.
Expert care for thyroid nodules and goitre
Every thyroid lump is different, so accurate diagnosis comes first — clinical assessment, high-resolution ultrasound and, where appropriate, an ultrasound-guided biopsy.
Benign thyroid nodules
Most nodules are non-cancerous but can keep growing, causing cosmetic concern, neck discomfort or difficulty swallowing.
Multinodular goitre
An enlarged thyroid with multiple nodules may cause visible swelling or pressure. Some patients suit minimally invasive treatment rather than surgery.
Cystic thyroid nodules
Fluid-filled nodules can recur after aspiration. RFA may offer a more durable option for suitable patients.
Recurrent thyroid nodules
After previous thyroid surgery, benign nodules can recur — and can sometimes be treated without another operation.

A treatment that preserves your thyroid
Surgery still matters for cancer, suspicious nodules and some very large goitres. But for suitable benign nodules, RFA offers a minimally invasive alternative that shrinks the nodule while keeping your thyroid working.
- Preserves the thyroid gland
- No surgical incision
- No visible neck scar
- Usually performed under local anaesthetic
- Short recovery period
- Most patients return to normal activities quickly
- Lower risk of lifelong thyroid-hormone dependence than thyroid removal
Is it right for you?
Not every nodule can be treated with RFA. Your suitability depends on:
- Ultrasound appearance
- Biopsy results
- Size and location
- Symptoms
- Overall thyroid function
Your specialist explains whether RFA is appropriate after reviewing your investigations.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Most patients feel only mild discomfort during treatment.
No. RFA is performed through a needle puncture rather than a surgical incision, so there is typically no visible neck scar.
The treated nodule shrinks gradually over several months, and improvement continues during follow-up.
Many patients keep normal thyroid function after RFA because the gland is preserved. Individual outcomes vary.
