Goitre Treatment Without Surgery: Your Options
3 March 2026 · Reviewed by Dr. Ebrahim Yusuf Ebrahim
A swelling at the base of the neck is unsettling — but it rarely means an operation is your only choice.
A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland, often seen as a swelling at the front of the neck. It can be caused by nodules, iodine levels, or an over- or under-active thyroid — and the right treatment depends on the cause.
When a goitre needs treating
Not every goitre needs treatment. It's worth acting when the swelling is visible and distressing, causes pressure or tightness, makes swallowing uncomfortable, or affects your voice.
The non-surgical option
When a goitre is driven by a benign nodule, radiofrequency ablation can shrink it without surgery. Targeted heat collapses the nodule from within, the swelling settles over the following months, and your healthy thyroid is preserved — no scar, no hospital stay.
When it's about hormones
If the goitre is linked to an over- or under-active thyroid, treatment focuses on correcting the hormone levels. Our specialist manages this alongside RFA, so you're assessed for the whole picture, not just the lump.
Getting assessed
A neck ultrasound and, where needed, a biopsy show what's driving your goitre and whether RFA can help. Send your scans on WhatsApp for a reports review to find out your options.
